This book was published under the auspices of Leland Stanford, former California governor and founder of Stanford University, who wagered a friend that a race horse at full gallop would take all four feet off the ground at once. Contains 107 illustrations and photographs (including colour lithographs, heliotypes, photogravures and wood engravings after photographs by Eadweard Muybridge) demonstrating the movement of horses and other animals.
